Home is Where the Heart Is

Dear Construction Nation,

In 1980 when I joined what is today UCON, I fell in love with construction! I love the people. I love the entrepreneurial spirit. I love thinking up things, and then building them. I love the industry – it is large complex and ever changing. I love that the things we build create our society. I just love construction!!

So, when I sold my partnering business of 35 years, to Rob Reaugh (who is just AWESOME) in December of 2020, I asked myself, well, what is next? Do I retire? Those who know me well, just laughed. Do I try sharing all that we know works in construction with others? That seemed to have some appeal. So I decided to write a general business book.

My book launched on February 1, 2022. It is entitled The Trusted Leader: Using the Partnering Approach to Become the Trusted Leader People Want to Follow. By February 2nd the book was #1 on Amazon for Business/Management. By February 3rd with was #1 for all nonfiction books on Amazon worldwide! It stayed there for several days. On February 11th it hit #2 on the Wall Street Journal bestselling books. The same day we hit the USA Today best sellers list. Wow! That was so fantastic. A dream come true.

On January 4th, 2022 I launched a new podcast, Lead with Trust. Some of you may recall my first podcast Construction Dream Team. I really love doing a podcast. Lead with Trust was going to be a way to share more deeply about the book and help a broad range of leaders.

It has been a wonderful journey for the past year and a half. I’ve worked with people in Japan, Switzerland, Spain, and of course the US. I’ve gotten to learn about manufacturing, real estate, wine, and finance industries. The people were wonderful and the businesses interesting. But for me…my heart is in construction!

You know how when you go on a wonderful vacation and then you get back home? That feeling that you are “home.”  Back where you belong, with the people you belong to. That is how I feel. I’ve taken a wonderful journey and looked at the world, and nothing compares to construction – my home! So, I am focusing my effort back into my beloved construction industry.

My grandfather (on my father’s side) was a developer. He built hundreds of custom homes and shopping centers in Concord and Walnut Creek California. My grandmother (on my mother’s side) was a developer. She bought homes and land and developed the land into a hospital and shopping centers. I guess construction is in my blood. I just really didn’t realize it fully, until I went on a journey away from home. I am so glad to be back home. I love you Construction Nation!

With deep gratitude,
